Professional Activities in the Field
Prof. Mgr. Soňa Kalenda, Ph.D., is a professor of social work at the Faculty of Social Studies, University of Ostrava. She specializes in qualitative methodologies in social work research, human rights, and participatory approaches to social work. She studies social work digitalisation, positions of social workers in social services, the quality of social services and their transformation; primarily with regards to endangered children, elderly people, and persons with disabilities. Her research also focuses on deinstitutionalization and transformation of various types of total institutions, residential social services, and residential institutions for minors and people with disabilities. She was a member of the research teams working on projects supported by the Czech Science Foundation titled Cognitive and Non-cognitive Determinants of Self-Regulated Learning Development in Students of Helping Professions (2009-2011) and Spots in Non-Formal Education of Adults: Non-Participants and their Social Worlds (2019-2021), an investigator of the projects titled Understanding the Mechanism of Self-Regulation in Children and Minors in Institutional Care (2013-2015) and Social Adjustment of Homeless Children with Domestic Violence Experience in the Territory of the City of Ostrava (2018-2020). As an independent expert, she cooperates with several social service agencies to which she provides supervision, support, and counseling. She cooperated with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs as an independent expert in several projects focused on deinstitutionalization of social services. The results of her work can be found in Clinical Social Work and Health Intervention, European Journal of Social Work, Journal of Social Work Practice, Czech and Slovak Social Work, Kontakt and many others.
