The Department of Social Studies was founded in 1995 as a part of the Medical-Social Faculty of the University of Ostrava, and since 2008 has been a part of the newly established Faculty of Social Studies. The Department of Social Work is a member of the Social Work Educators Association of the Czech Republic. The five-year Master's degree programme in Social Work with Focus on Health Care and the doctoral degree programme in Social Policy and Social Work are attended by 180 students on site.

Department staff members are engaged in comparative research of social work and social policy theories, the social context of global ecological problems, and issues connected with the welfare state. The Department also focuses on the application of the integrated research method in social work.
