How does a field internship work?

The internship of an international student is always performed on a continuous basis and must reach 80 hours within 10 calendar days. The student visits the selected organisation within a maximum range of 3 consecutive weeks.

The internship is tandem-based, meaning as a team of an international student – a Czech student working together (they always attend the internship together). A Czech student provides translation support to an international student and helps the peer student to understand the Czech social work system. Both students (international and Czech) complete their field internship under the supervision of a mentor, who is usually an experienced social worker in the organisation. A mentor participates through their entire internship.

A Czech student is assigned to an international student by the Faculty based on his/her interest in the same target group, or interest in an internship in the same organisation. The Foreign Relations Officer Pavla Nemethová is responsible for connecting an international student with his/her Czech counterpart with whom the student will work in tandem. The Foreign Relations Officer also passes the international student a contact for the relevant Internship Supervisor, who is responsible for all other requirements of the tandem internship and who has been established the contact person and adviser for international students.

Before starting the internship, an international student is acquainted with all aspects of occupational health and safety, fire protection and confidentiality. International students are informed about the training by their Internship Supervisor or by a person authorized by the supervisor.
