Degree programme in a nutshell

The doctoral study program Social Work provides postgraduate studies, which aims to prepare excellent professionals in the field of social work who have knowledge of the current international theoretical discourse of social work responding to societal changes, can create concepts and strategies for developing social programs, policies and services that are part of social work. They know advanced methods of qualitative and quantitative research and are able to apply scientific methodology and approaches in human sciences and society sciences in the field of social work, they can independently solve scientific tasks and feasible program evaluations and social innovation programs.

The content of the study is based on the current state of scientific knowledge and creative activities in the field of social work and related fields and is set to achieve the achieved profile of the graduate. The study lasts four years, it is completed by a state final examination and the defense of a dissertation.

What do we expect from you?

The study of the doctoral study program Social Work is intended for graduates of a master's degree in the field of social work, or in a related field (if the candidate can justify his choice by practice in the field).

We expect that you will actively participate in scientific work at the faculty and also in the professional discussion of the scientific community (publication of professional studies, presentations at conferences, participation in and solving of student and other scientific grant projects, etc.).

What will you learn?

During the the course of the study, students are systematically led to independent creative research activities so that they are able to apply their knowledge in profile areas and apply themselves as experts in teams solving scientific problems in related areas.

Students are led to independent and critical thinking, as well as to the independent acquisition of additional professional knowledge and their implementation. Graduates know advanced analytical methods of quantitative research in social work, advanced approaches to qualitative research, including their use and reflection of limits.

They will learn to design and implement basic and applied research in social work, analyze and interpret the data obtained, design and process an extensive professional text, orient themselves in depth in the topic, work with professional literature.

Course of the entrance examination

1st round – assessment of the application with compulsory attachments (no. 1–3) by the admission procedure committee without the applicant′s presence

Only applications submitted online via the „e-application“ by the deadline of 1 August 2026, which are also duly paid by the deadline of 1 August 2026, are considered.

Only compulsory attachments (no. 1–3) submitted online via „e-application“ by 1 August 2026 inclusive will be assessed. If the compulsory attachments are not submitted by the set deadline, the application will not be considered complete and will not be assessed at the entrance examination, meaning that the applicant will not meet the conditions of the admission procedure.

Scoring of the compulsory attachments to the application:

  • Project of the dissertation thesis (max. 70 points)
    • brief description of the theoretical starting points (max. 20 points);
    • description of the main research question or questions, the goals of the research (max. 20 points);
    • a reflection on the possible approaches to the research, the research method and the research population and on the organisation of the research (max. 20 points);
    • an overview of the basic literature which will provide starting points for the doctoral dissertation thesis with emphasis on foreign-language literature (max. 10 points).
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 30 points)
    • Assessment of previous experience in the field (max. 5 points);
    • Assessment of previous publication outputs (max. 10 points);
    • Assessment of previous participation in research projects (max. 5 points);
    • Assessment of previous active participation in conferences (max. 5 points);
    • Assessment of previous additional university activities (max. 5 points).

The maximum score attainable by an applicant is 100 points. The minimum number of points required for passing and advancing to the 2nd round of the entrance examination is 75.

2nd round – oral presentation of the project of the dissertation thesis, which was the subject of the 1st round, before the admission procedure committee (oral interview)

The applicant is required to be present (face to face or online). Invitations to the entrance examination will be delivered to the „e-application“ of the electronic information system of the University of Ostrava.

Scoring the oral interview:

  • oral presentation of the project of the dissertation thesis within a maximum duration of 15 minutes (max. 30 points);
  • oral defence of the project of the dissertation thesis (max. 40 points);
  • verification of professional knowledge and knowledge of relevant professional literature related to the presented project of the dissertation thesis during the oral interview (max. 30 points).

The maximum score attainable by an applicant is 100 points. The minimum number of points required for passing the examination of the 2nd round is 75. In the second round, only the points obtained in the second round are assessed; points from the first round are not transferred to the second round.

Conditions for admission to the study programme

  1. The applicant has submitted a valid application for study in the form of „e-application“ by the deadline of 1 August 2026 inclusive.
  2. The applicant has submitted compulsory attachments no later than 1 August 2026 inclusive (see Supporting documents for the application below).
  3. The applicant has successfully passed the entrance examination (i.e. has passed the 1st round and the 2nd round of the entrance examination).
  4. The applicant has ranked within the set limit of admitted applicants based on the results of the second round (in order from the best results of the 2nd round of the entrance examination in descending order).
  5. The applicant proposed for admission to study has completed a Master′s degree programme in social work or a related field (within FORD 5 according to the Frascati Manual OECD classification)

The applicant proposed for admission to study is required to submit in person or by post (Faculty of Social Studies, University of Ostrava, Českobratrská 16, Ostrava, Czech Republic; office no. 103) a notarized copy of a document proving the successful completion of a Master′s degree programme in social work or a related field (within FORD 5 according to the Frascati Manual OECD classification) no later than on 30 October 2026.

Please note that the applicants who have obtained a foreign university education by completing a foreign university study program at a foreign university must prove the successful completion of a Master′s degree programme also no later than 30 October 2026: The applicants provide a nostrification clause or a certificate of equivalence of foreign education. This does not apply if the Czech Republic, in accordance with its international obligations, considers a foreign document certifying foreign higher education to be automatically equivalent without further official proceedings. In such cases, the applicant shall only submit a notarized copy of such a document. More information is available at Foreign Transcripts.

Admission requirement verification methods

  • Completion of the Master′s degree in higher education in the field of social work or a related field (within the framework of FORD 5 according to the Frascati Manual OECD classification), is verified by the Department of Science and Research by checking a notarized copy of the document of completed Master′s degree programme or other relevant documents proving the fulfilment of the legal condition of the admission procedure (Section 48 paragraphs 3 and 5 of Act No. 111/1998 Coll., on Higher Education Institutions and on Amendments and Supplements to Some Other Acts, as amended).
  • The submission of the „e-application“ and the payment of the administrative fee for the admission procedure within the set deadline are verified by the Department of Science and Research in the STAG information system.
  • The submission of the compulsory attachments within the set deadline is verified by the Department of Science and Research in the STAG information system.
  • The passing of the two-round entrance examination is verified in the form of the Entrance Examination Protocol, which is drawn up by the admissions procedure committee at the entrance examination.
  • The placement of an applicant in the specified number of admitted applicants according to the order from the best results of the 2nd round of the entrance examination in descending order is verified according to the table, where the applicants are ranked according to the number of points achieved.

Delivery of written documents

All documents related to the admission procedure for the academic year 2026/2027 will be delivered by the Faculty of Social Studies of the University of Ostrava via the electronic information system of the University of Ostrava – the „e-application“.

The administrative fee for submission of an application amounts to CZK 800.

Tuition fee

The annual tuition fee for studies amounts to CZK 40,000 every academic year of study (in compliance with the Statute of the University of Ostrava, Appendix no. 3 Fees connected with studies at the University of Ostrava, Article 4).

  1. Attachment no. 1 – Project of the doctoral dissertation thesis (1000–2000 words) structured in the required manner and containing:
    • preliminary title of the doctoral dissertation thesis;
    • brief description of the theoretical starting points;
    • description of the main research question or questions, the goals of the research;
    • a reflection on the possible approaches to the research, the research method and the research population and on the organisation of the research;
    • an overview of the basic literature which will provide starting points for the doctoral dissertation with emphasis on foreign-language literature.

The applicant chooses a topic for the doctoral dissertation thesis from the list of current topic areas, available at Admission Procedure, or submits their own topic that corresponds with the main research directions at FSS UO.

The applicant may consult on the project of the doctoral dissertation thesis before submitting it.

Please note that a supervisor is assigned by the Faculty Board for Doctoral Study Programmes to the applicant already admitted to study, based on the individual study plan.
