Degree programme: Social Policy and Social Work

Degree: Management of Social Services Organizations

Description of the degree

The 2-year Master’s degree (Mgr.) in Management of Social Services Organizations responds to the pressing need for qualified managers in the social work profession and public administration; such managers require knowledge and skills that are applicable to managing people and leading teams, coordinating organizational changes, evaluating interventions, and implementing innovations. The degree reflects the necessity to re-evaluate previous strategies for social work and social services organization and management in line with current legislation and changing practices. The aim of the degree is to train graduates who are capable of solving theoretical and applied problems, i.e. experts with in-depth theoretical knowledge and excellent practical skills in social work and social services management. The degree incorporates a balanced combination of economics-related disciplines (e.g. company finance, financial management, management, marketing, etc.) and social sciences disciplines (e.g. social work methods in the context of modernization, sociology of organizations, law in social work/social services organizations, etc.); this helps graduates to negotiate tensions between economic, social and ethical goal-setting.

The Faculty has an extended accreditation to offer a Joint Degree in Management of Social Work Organizations. Students spend part of their studies with our partner organizations the Fachhochschule Campus Wien (Austria) and the University of Trnava (Slovakia). This enables students to acquire new knowledge and skills as part of their degree programme, helping them to gain a stronger position on the European job market.

Teaching in the Joint Degree programme follows the curriculum for the degree in Management of Social Work Organizations, and is offered either in full-time or part-distance form. The only difference compared with the standard curriculum is the inclusion of three compulsory additional courses:

  • Social problems and the function of social policy in modern societies – taught in English or German by Prof. Baum from Germany. The course also includes a lecture by a staff member from one of our partner institutions (Vienna, Trnava).
  • International project management – a two-week study stay at our partner institution in Vienna focusing on creating a project for a specific organization in Austria.
  • Master’s thesis – the Master’s thesis is supervised or reviewed by a staff member from one of our partner institutions (Vienna, Trnava).

The degree can be studied in full-time or part-distance form.
